Quarterfinals - Callen Kirchner of Schaumburg [G] v Ayden Shuey of DeKalb [R] (126)
This quarterfinal match at the IWCOA frosh/soph state tournament featured Callen Kirchner of Schaumburg High School in the green anklet and Ayden Shuey of DeKalb High School in the red anklet. Both wrestlers had advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning their previous opponents.
Kirchner got off to a fast start in the first period by finishing a low single to score a takedown and getting a quick two near fall points. Shuey was able to fight off his back with relative ease and get to his feet for a quick escape. From the neutral position, Shuey fired off a low single of his own, but Kirchner was able to successfully defend the shot and the one-minute first period came to a close with Kirchner ahead 4-1.
After winning the disc flip, Kirchner deferred his choice to the third period and Shuey quickly chose the bottom position. The decision looked to be a mistake as Kirchner was close to turning Shuey several times riding legs until Shuey was able to escape with thirty seconds left in the second period closing cutting the deficit to 4-2. From the neutral position, Kirchner was able to build on his lead by hitting a low double and taking Shuey straight to his back for a takedown and three more near fall points to end the period up 9-2.
Kirchner chose the bottom position to start the third period and was able to secure a relatively quick reversal taking Shuey to his back again picking up another three back points extending his lead to 14-2. With a technical fall now clearly in sight, Kirchner was able to lock up a far side cradle and take Shuey to his back again for another three near fall points to secure the 17-2 technical fall. Both athletes had a great tournament and finished in the top 8.
