Caleb Viscogliosi of Yorkville [R] v Van Grasser of Chicago Agricultural [G] (145)

This quarterfinal at the IWCOA frosh/soph state tournament featured Caleb Viscogliosi of Yorkville High School in the red anklet and Van Grasser of Chicago Agricultural High School in the green anklet. Both wrestlers were coming off of close matches in the round of 16 with Viscogliosi winning a 5-4 decision and Grasser winning 8-6 in sudden victory.

Grasser got on the scoreboard first by converting on a low single attempt. Not discouraged, Viscogliosi came back with a quick reversal to the back and picked up two additional near fall points to tip the score in his favor (4-2). Despite the one minute first period, the scoring was still not done. Viscogliosi was able to lock up a far side cradle and turn Grasser for two more near fall points extending his lead to 6-2 at the end of the first period.

Grasser won the disc flip and chose down to start the second period and earned a quick escape to close the gap. Shortly after the escape, Viscogliosi got in deep on an outside single, but was unable to convert, which proved costly as Grasser was able to score the next takedown closing the gap to 6-5 by the end of the second period.

With choice in the third period, Viscogliosi chose bottom. About halfway through the third period, Grasser chose to cut Viscogliosi prior to the restart making the score 7-5 Viscogliosi. Needing the takedown to tie the match, Grasser was able to successfully hit a low double to make the score 7-7. To round out the scoring, Viscogliosi was able to hit a reversal before giving up a quick escape.

The match ended 9-8 with Viscogliosi moving on to the semi-final.
